Gas Street Social at The Mailbox, in Birmingham City Centre overlooks the beautiful and relaxing Gas Street Basin canal. It’s an independent and stylish looking place, and insists that we socialise. In fact on a Summers evening or morning in this reviews case, it sounds a lovely idea. 

Hence, last weekend Gas Street Social launched its new Brunch menu. The Bottomless brunch as its called takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 9am-1pm. Very civilised. 

They are serving favourites such as the Veggie English and its meaty variety, buttermilk pancakes, eggs benedict and with added coffee and fresh juices, Bloody Mary’s and a Bottomless Bellini offer or a Mimosa cocktail. Plus the healthier homemade granola with yogurt, porridge and fruit platters.

Myself and Ruth were invited along to sample their new brunch menu on its opening morning. On the day that Ruth and I ate (Saturday) the clouds were heavy with rain and umbrellas were the essential early summer fashion accessory. Arriving wet at Gas Street Social we were greeted by the soft sounds of jazz which made for a lovely welcoming atmosphere. 

In order to sample the menu in its fullness we were offered a Bellini or Mimosa cocktail which at 11.30 sounded a good idea.

Both were lovely cocktails, well made,  fresh, and perfect for a  brunch with a good infusion of boosting morning flavour. 

Part of the Bottomless brunch is the unlimited toast. Ruth battled gamely with the new do it yourself  toaster that seemed to be surprised that it was yes making toast. She won eventually though with a bit of help from the nice Gas Street Social staff. The Artisan fresh bread was delicious and made excellent toast. 

   
     

After ordering coffee, a lovely Brazilian blend (black) that went well with the breakfast, we dived into the main event.

Sweet potato cake, two free range eggs, Roasted Plum tomatoes, Flat Mushroom, Sautéed Potatoes, Street Social beans, toasted Hockley Bread, Hand roasted filter coffee or choice of breakfast tea. 

It was a lovely breakfast. All of the ingredients on the plate were well cooked, seasoned beautifully, with a lovely use of herbs on the egg which lifted the flavours of the veggie brunch. 

The real star of the show though was the Sweet Potato cakes, so delicious that you could eat a plate on their own (or at least as a sharing plate) these beautiful sweet potato mounds of joy delivered on flavour, and it’s addition took the breakfast above the average veggie breakfast and made it a brand new positive experience.

 You can tell I liked them. 

   
   

The eggs, mushrooms, tomato were cooked well. On reflection I would have liked a choice of egg on ordering, but that’s a minor quibble. The sautéed potatoes were a nice addition and again lifted the breakfast above the average. I like the fact that the baked beans came in its own pot. Leaving you to choose whether to tip them out or not. I did, but next time I may not. 

It was a delicious and highly recommended brunch. 

Gas Street Social is all about sharing and socialising. The large tables and intimate booths make for a good atmosphere. It’s a brilliant venue for brunch, light, airy, with a nice view of the canal below. There are tables on the terrace. 

I can see it being popular with a mix of people from those needing a hearty brunch after the night before, families passing, nice for kids, those staying in the area who fancy a different breakfast/brunch experience than their hotel.

 Plus with the Bottomless Bellini birthday brunch parties or celebrations would work very well too. 

My veggie brunch was one of the best I’ve had and the space in which I ate it only enhanced the experience. 

In fact when we were leaving after 1pm people were either coming into order lunch or were already eating it. So, a good idea maybe, make an afternoon of it. Kick back, relax. Be social. 

Now That would be fun.
