Love Gin? Get to Gin Fields at The High Field Edgbaston, Saturday 13th August. 


 

Could gin be the drink of connoisseurs? On the rocks, with a slosh of tonic or as part of a perfect martini, gin is the ideal Sunner drink. That clear liquor, the backbone of these irreplaceable drinks and others in between. 

Well, 

The High Field in Edgbaston is staging a fabulous festival for the grown-ups that’s all about celebrating the great drink that is gin.

So if you do love a refreshing gin cocktail or classic gin and tonic and want  to learn a bit more about this great English tipple in the glorious surroundings of a gorgeous city gastropub garden? Then get to The High Field in Edgbaston on Saturday 13th August for Gin Fields.

 Gin Fields is a fabulous festival for the grown-ups that’s all about celebrating the great drink that is gin. The entire afternoon and evening will be dedicated to it, and there’ll be oodles of ways to try Mother’s Ruin as well as discovering things you never knew about gin.

 Sidle up to the big outside bar and take a peak at the fantastic selection of premium gins on offer. There’ll be favourites from the High Field’s list like Brockmans, Hendrick’s and Whitley Neill as well as a few special guest appearances from some rare and unusual gins. Look out for Salcombe Gin, a smooth and delicious gin handcrafted in Devon using 13 different botanicals, the finest English wheat spirit and pure Dartmoor water and Brilliant Gin, a delicately flavoured artisan small batch spirit, alongside William Chase GB and Big Boss Gin.

Expert gin makers from some of these top distillers will also be on hand to share their love of gin and chat to you about its heritage, character and flavour, and then it will be down to the serious business of tasting. 

Sip on a refreshing gin and elderflower slush puppy or a fruity gin bramble or shake things up with a sensational gin and pink grapefruit. Cool down with a Jude’s G&T ice cream and lollies from Birmingham newcomers Creamed Pops. There will also be the ultimate G&T as well as cocktails galore. Listen to sounds from the DJ who will be spinning the decks all afternoon and pick something tasty from the BBQ to go with your gin.

 “We’ve all got a soft spot for gin here at The High Field and our grand gins always slip down a treat,” says The High Field’s general manager, Sarah Robinson. “But this time we’re making it really special by turning our whole garden into a celebration of the drink. Whether you fancy a drink that’s long or short, refreshing or sweet, gin is just great and we look forward to mixing you the perfect one at Gin Fields,” she says.

Tickets for Gin Fields at The High Field cost £10 and are only available on the door on the day, Saturday 13th August, from 2pm. Entry fee includes a G&T on arrival, gin tasters and a keepsake Grand Gin glass for mixing the perfect gin at home. Gin Fields ends at 6pm and will be held indoors in the event of rain.

Foodies Festival comes to Birmingham’s Cannon Hill Park 15-17th May 2015


This May an exciting new food festival arrives in Birmingham. Throughout the weekend of 15-17 May the Uk’s biggest celebration of food and drink will transform Cannon Hill Park into a foodie paradise with Birmingham’s Michelin-Starred, and top chefs, a new tasting theatre, pop up restaurants, and Street Food in the form of Street Food Avenue: Exciting!

Originally set up in Scotland in 2005, it promises to be a superb foodie day out for all the family.

The Aga Rangmaster Chefs Theatre welcomes Michelin Starred chef Glynn Purnell as well as Simpsons  Matt Cheal and Lasan’s Aktar Islam who will cook their favourite summer recipes and share top tips for visitors to take away and impress families and friends with. 

Fans of Masterchef can also see 2014 winner Ping Coombes cook her signature dishes from the series in the Chefs Theatre and try her Malaysian Pop-up on the Street Food Avenue. Ping is also joined by Masterchef 2010 winner Dhruv Baker and finalist Jackie Kearney. 

Also Birmingham can enjoy toasting Foodies’ 10th Anniversary in the New Wine and Champagne Theatre where experts Neil Phillips and Charles Metcalfe will guide visitors through the seasons best British bubbles and beer expert Melissa Cole hosts masterclasses in the New Craft Beer Theatre, matching foods with locally produced alcoholic and non alcoholic craft beers. 

Also on offer on the New Tasting Theatre will be ‘How to sniff chocolate like a Rockstar’ or Chocolate Safari. A group of masterclasses  with Coeur de Xocolat. 

Of interest to veggies and vegans are masterclasses in Raw Food and Vegan blogger Katy B from Little Miss Meat Free will be sharing her recipes, tips and inspiring visitors to create vegan meals and bakes at home. Katy is one of my favourite bloggers and her blog is well worth checking out.

The Cake & Bake Theatre will showcase local cake makers and bakeries sharing their tips for baking delicious Summer Cakes. Their will also be Sugar-craft masterclasses and a Chocolate Cake and Bake Village. Selling bakes, jams, gadgets and baking essentials. 

The part of the festival I’m looking forward to is the so called Street Food Avenue a vibrant and exciting festival hub showcasing the best of street food from around the world, hopefully with some good veggie dishes to enjoy. 

There will also be an Artisan Producers Market of over 200 exhibitors. 

Here visitors can meet the producers and sample and buy award winning produce, cheese, wines, bakes and condiments. 

For children there will be a Children’s Cookery Theatre and learn basic cooking skills with Kiddy Cook. 

Plus live music, a pop up bar and entertainment throughout the day. 

As with all food festivals there should be plenty for veggies and vegans to enjoy,  when I know more about the vendors and traders I will update my post.

Christmas Dinner at The Highfield, Edgbaston


It’s taken awhile for me to visit The Highfield, a lots been going on in the last few months, but I’m so glad I left a first visit until Christmas as our first experience was exceptional.

Last Friday Ruth and I with my parents visited to try out their Christmas menu.

The Highfield sits in leafy Edgbaston opposite Simpsons restaurant (the place ruth and I had our first Christmas meal at) and near the lovely Edgbaston bar and hotel.

It’s white colour stands out, a lovely villa type building that looks the part from the outside and inside is as cool as a cucumber and on a busy Friday before Christmas was buzzy and lively.

Initially the service was leaden and as lumpy as Carvery custard, but greatly got better though I was unsure why the waiter that took us to our table told me I couldn’t have a Langley’s Gin Martini at the table, very odd.

Ruth chose her obligatory Cosmopolitan and I chose a Langley’s gin and tonic with juniper berries. Both were stunning, and a great way to begin a meal, good choices.

So to the food.

My parents and Ruth chose the mushroom soup and porcini cream which they all loved and it certainly looked delicious.

I chose the whipped butternut squash, goats curd, and baby leaves, tossed seeds. A really enjoyable dish, the whipped squash cooling and delicious against the crunch of seeds a thoroughly lovely starter.

Myself and my Mum both chose the veggie option as we both are, which I would say was a surprising delight of flavours and a real joy as a main course.

The shallot, and chestnut Bourguignon, beetroot relish dish was very memorable. The depth of flavour of the red wine sauce with the chestnut and the zing of the shallots, a superb dish. All main courses were served with vegetables and it proved a worthy Christmas dinner main course.

My Dad and Ruth both had the turkey and this went down well too.

To end I had the White chocolate Valrhona cheesecake which was creamy and very enjoyable too. An excellent cheese cake. Light and with a lovely delicate Baileys flavour running subtly through.

As a gastro pub The Highfield is certainly adept in the kitchen, as a bar a place to have a drink and move on.

The cooking at every level was a notch above expectation for a Christmas dinner and wetted my appetite for a Sunday lunch in the new year.

The veggie options were original and very rewarding.

Our Highfield visit, well better late than never. One to return to again and again.

MAC FOOD MARKET: 10-30-3.30pm SUNDAY 26TH OCTOBER


Indulge your culinary desires at The MAC, Edgbaston, Birmingham this Sunday 26th October 2014.

The MAC in Cannon Hill Park, is an excellent place to visit in the Autumn. The park lovely to stoll around, kicking leaves, feeding the ducks…

The food market is a monthly event (last Sunday of the month except in December) and features a host of local artisan producers, artisan bakers, and specialist food producers and street food vendors.

There will be loads for veggies to enjoy such as:

#TASTY MORSELS: THE HIGHFIELD: NEW GASTRO PUB FOR EDGBASTON BIRMINGHAM OPENING SOON


Independent pub Company Peach are turning an Art Deco style townshouse in Edgbaston, Birmingham B15
into a 17 Century gastro pub. Which will be the first in Birmingham.

Due to open in late September the company run by Lee Cash and Hamish Stoddart will turn the former home of English architect Francis W B Yorke into a 100 cover pub. 🙂

The Edgbaston cocktail bar and boutique hotel (see earlier review). Already a healthy foody location Edgbaston also houses The Blue Piano, and the
deli @ Edgbaston.

The Highfield will have a good mix of food for vegetarians from deli plates, to starters, to main courses and will also serve breakfasts from 8am.

From what I can see the menu will include a deli veggie board, Starters– soup, sauteed wild mushrooms, poached free range egg, toasted brioche, Mains– herb pancakes with squash and sage stuffing, and a Heritage tomato Tarte Tatin.

The Highfield is a boost to the local Edgbaston area, which is fast becoming a foodie destiantion and will soon have a new restaurant run by Pushkar on Broad Street too. See post to come shortly.

For vegetarians it looks a good place to go especially if you have a meat eating partner, friends or family. The drinks will include craft beers, real ale and a good strong wine and spirit list including local Langley’s Gin (not sure about cocktails).

It aims to be modern and quirky and have an art deco leaning with a British charm.

I will post more details of an opening date, bookings and menus when I have them and of course a review.

It sounds a charming opening.

The Edgbaston bar opening 2nd May 2014


The Edgbaston area of Birmingham is due to welcome a new cocktail bar and boutique hotel to its leafy suburbs on Friday 2nd May when The Edgbaston opens its doors.

With their sister hotel The Kenilworth boasting numerous awards and plaudits, Birmingham is due a real treat.

My wife and I stayed at the Kenilworth Hotel a couple of weeks ago and sampled some superb cocktails in the bar downstairs.

The Edgbaston will serve classic, original cocktails and spirits with table service with a slick and trendy vibe. The Edgbaston according to their website will house three cocktail lounges and advises that reservations are recomended in order to guarantee a table.
