Review:

A visit to Bistro 1847 whatever the time of year is a joyous experience of perfect harmonies and sweet choral voices, but at Christmas it’s like a sweet Christmas carol that evokes the season and makes you swoon and smile.

As always with Bistro 1847 the dishes are innovative, quirky and a pleasure to the eye. The service on the night Ruth and I visited was spot on, attentive and friendly with an enthusiasm for the seasonal menu and knowledge of the excellent cocktails which we enjoyed.

Ruth and I chose off the Christmas mini a la carte-grazing menu.

IMG_2316.JPG

IMG_2312.JPG

IMG_2315.JPG

To begin we ate:

Lemon-grass, chili, coconut, parsnip, potato crackling, wild mushroom, (2nd photo)

Ruth really enjoyed the complex flavours and the combination of textures on this dish.

I ate the

Wild herb sauce, wild sea cabbage, Brussel sprout, potato crackling and ‘parmesan’ dumpling: (1st photo)

I have to say an outstanding dish, you either love or loath sprouts, but even the most hardened sprout hater would love the textures and slightly crunchy cabbage and bitter sprout flavours of this dish which was a real twist on the Christmas tradition. Lovely.

To follow we both chose the same dish:

Spiced squash and nut praline filo, real ale gravy, seasonal vegetables.

IMG_2319.JPG

Probably the most traditional Christmas dish on the menu. Deliberately chosen for this reason. It ticked all the boxes for us, a real warming, filling comfort food dish, with lovely notes of squash and real ale gravy. The filo was delicious, firm, but soft, beautifully presented, a real winner.

For desert Ruth chose and enjoyed the Christmassy toffee flavours of the Sticky toffee, chestnut, smoked ice cream

I chose the sorrel, white chocolate, Apple, Douglasfir.

Very Bistro 1847, a lovely combination of flavours with the white chocolate running through the dish, really nice.

We finished off with two coffee liqueurs, which were a coffee hit, almost espresso like, lovely.

The Christmas mini a la carte menu is a lovely festive menu. Innovative, thoughtful with a delicate leaning to the season, tradition and most definately jolly and different.

On the night the Bistro was full, which was lovely to see and why we booked and wished to visit on a Friday night.

For a different Christmas type experience with good veggie and vegan dishes Bistro 1847 is a restaurant worth checking out.

Our two meals and cocktails were kindly complimentary, we also purchased ourselves two glasses of organic wine and a side of fresh bread. All opinions expressed are my own and honest as always. A favourable review was not required.

I would like to personally thank all the staff at Bistro 1847, chef Alex, and Damien for all their kind support of my blog this year.

Thanks guys and have a very happy Christmas and New Year.

Here’s to the New Year’s dishes. 😊 and further visits in 2015.

Thanks for reading

#TASTYMORSELS: YIPSY MACARONS: HANDMADE MACARONS

I was fortunate a couple of weeks ago to be offered a complimentary selection of Yipsy Macarons to sample which I was most pleased about by Angela Yip-founder of Yipsy Macarons.

Fuelled by her passion for baking and love for Macarons Yipsy was founded by Angela Yip who left the world of finance and set up her own business making macarons.

Macarons are light, small meringue cookies made of almond flour, egg white, and sugar in a smooth colourful shell with little ‘feet’ sandwiched by a tasty ganache, buttercream, or curd filling. They come in different flavours.

They are not to be confused with macaroons that have no filling and are made from honey and coconut.

Angela delivered the macarons to me herself and they came in a secure pack of six different flavours, presented beautifully and peeking out of the packaging very temptingly.

I wasn’t allowed to open them until Ruth came home from work, so had to put them out of temptations way until the evening. 🙂

They came in six different flavours, they were superb and so pretty and suitable for vegetarians.

Not only did they look stunning on the plate, but were perfect little morsels of sweet seduction. They just melted in the mouth, each one unique, the flavours were delicious, the strawberry and pistachio and chocolate went down well. They were chewy, creamy and crisp, very indulgent and perfectly handmade.

Yipsy Macarons are available from their website http://www.yipsymacarons.com as a atreat for yourself, a loved one, or for a party or wedding. They make a lovely gift for a food loving friend or partner. Ideal for a celebration or as a wedding centre piece.

Prices start at 12 macarons for £15.00, great value for the handmade craft involved.

The Macarons are wrapped with secure packaging and hand delivered in the West Midlands or within 2 days via Royal Mail for £4.00.

They can be gift wrapped for an extra £2.00.

See the website for full details of packages and offers.

http://www.yipsymacarons.com

For that special indulgence that is different and perfectly handmade they can’t be beat.

The best macarons we had ever tasted was the comment:)

Thanks to Angela for the sample pack of Yipsi Macarons Ruth and I loved them and look forward to re ordering soon.

#TASTY MORSELS: THE HIGHFIELD: NEW GASTRO PUB FOR EDGBASTON BIRMINGHAM OPENING SOON

Independent pub Company Peach are turning an Art Deco style townshouse in Edgbaston, Birmingham B15
into a 17 Century gastro pub. Which will be the first in Birmingham.

Due to open in late September the company run by Lee Cash and Hamish Stoddart will turn the former home of English architect Francis W B Yorke into a 100 cover pub. 🙂

The Highfield will be in leafy Edgbaston, opposite Michelin starred
Simpsons Restuarant and near
The Edgbaston cocktail bar and boutique hotel (see earlier review). Already a healthy foody location Edgbaston also houses The Blue Piano, and the
deli @ Edgbaston.

The Highfield will have a good mix of food for vegetarians from deli plates, to starters, to main courses and will also serve breakfasts from 8am.

From what I can see the menu will include a deli veggie board, Starters– soup, sauteed wild mushrooms, poached free range egg, toasted brioche, Mains– herb pancakes with squash and sage stuffing, and a Heritage tomato Tarte Tatin.

The food will be free range and sourced locally. See their website for details.

http://www.highfieldedgbaston.co.uk

The Highfield is a boost to the local Edgbaston area, which is fast becoming a foodie destiantion and will soon have a new restaurant run by Pushkar on Broad Street too. See post to come shortly.

For vegetarians it looks a good place to go especially if you have a meat eating partner, friends or family. The drinks will include craft beers, real ale and a good strong wine and spirit list including local Langley’s Gin (not sure about cocktails).

It aims to be modern and quirky and have an art deco leaning with a British charm.

I will post more details of an opening date, bookings and menus when I have them and of course a review.

It sounds a charming opening.

For now, see their website http://www.highfieldedgbaston.co.uk for full details, and menus.

#TASTYMORSELS: VEGETARIAN PIZZA WATCH

20140812-102612.jpg

Pizza has often been the default food option for vegetarians. I’ve always been fond of pizza, from trips to Italy and memories of beautiful Italian squares.

In Birmingham their is a renaissance in pizzas, with many places offering good pizza options and creative toppings for vegetarians. Many now use a sourdough base and wood fired ovens.

Ruth and I didn’t intend to visit Alfie Birds at the Custard factory in Digbeth last weekend, but we were their for the vintage fair and needed some lunch so thought why not.

I had wanted to try their veggie pizzas for awhile.

We shared a chunky vegetable pizza, which was very good. A thin base, lovely fresh vegetable flavours and an added twist of beetroot on it, which enhanced the texture and attitude of the pizza. With a pint of Italian lager and a side salad it was a good example of the improvements in the city with the introduction of more creative thinking to ingredients and toppings.

Alfie Birds use a woodfired oven too so that could be a factor.

They also do a delicious sounding vegan pizza with spinach and a vegan pesto.

I plan to visit again and do a full review soon, when i try some more of their veggie pizzas along with their cocktails which are two for one Monday to Thursday.

Alfie Birds plan to launch a new menu soon. See website for menus and events.

They have also introduced a vegan pizza to their repertoire with tofu.

They also do garlic bread and a sweet pizza of Butterscotch sauce and sliced apple with a cinammon mix spice.

They will be creating their pizzas from a van near you:)

#TastyMorsels: Chung Ying Central Summer Menu Express Lunch

Chung Yung Central is Birmingham’s newest Oriental restauarnt, located on Colmore Row in Birmingham City Centre. It sits in the Colmore Business District area of the city near to The Bureau Bar and Victoria Square. It opened in November 2013.

Chung Ying Central has a modern and contemporary decor and offers a variety of high quality Dim Sum, specially selected dishes and cocktails in its cocktail bar and beers.

The Express Lunch runs from 11.30-2.30 in the week and 12-3pm on Saturdays.

It is priced at £5.95 for any dim sum and soup. With other options available for more money. The dim sum and soup is the best for veggies.

For veggies the menu offers vegetarian Spring Rolls and crispy vegetarian Won Ton for dim sum.

The restaurant has advised me that the two soups and some of the other dishes on the menu can be veggified (great word) too on request. So veggies need not miss out:)

It seems a brilliant deal. One that is Summery and at a good price.

The menu has many other options for non veggies, so grab a friend or six from your office or just go yourself and try it out.

Chung Ying Central also offers a Happy Hour on its cocktails, beers and bar snacks where you buy one get one free on selected drinks. This is from 4pm-7pm daily.
