Veggie Brunch/Lunch watch: Bloom, Kings Heath, Birmingham.

I could live here.

That could well be the end of my review but alas that would insult my indulgence and yes your intelligence and would beg the question why? Well the plate of food I tried here at Bloom in Kings Heath is easily the best plate of food I’ve eaten anywhere this year. It could quite possibly be edging towards bern the best brunch dish I’ve ever tasted. It’s mind bogglingly good. Harmonious flavours, interesting ingredients, originality in its essence and cost, the bargain of the century. It’s informal dining at its best, though there’s nothing casual about the dishes coming out of the kitchen.

So Let me introduce you to the Vegan friendly Carrot Gnocchi, Red beets, sherry radishes, gingered swede, caraway pickled walnuts, and orange hemp seed dressing. £7.5

Complex flavours, a melt in the mouth texture. When a dish is this good it’s hard to find fault and dwelling on the superlatives is the same only rational response. The use of carrots to make gnocchi is new to me, but works in a way that is beyond words. The Sherry radishes, a delightful crunch with subtle sherry overtones, and the majestic red beets, an exotic touch. Autumn on a plate, a beautiful hug me all over and hug me again moment. I’m speechless even now. A divine treat on a plate.

Ruth was also happy (well it was her Birthday lunch) with her Bubble and Squeak, Boston Baked Beans, Poached hens egg, pea shoots, with Grilled Haloumi or streaky bacon £8. She ate it with bacon but for veggies haloumi is an option. Beautifully presented (as my dish was too) it had a good flavour, with the homemade beans hitting the spot. She felt she should have had the haloumi though instead of the bacon which she felt would have worked better to make a fuller more well rounded dish.

Our food was washed down by two excellent liquid Cuddle Beers Which Complimented the two dishes well.

Bubble and Squeak dish.

To follow we ordered two cakes from the selection which were of high standard and lovely with the coffee. Well worth having on their own.

pumpkins, pumpkins pumpkins.

The flat white (£2.50) we ordered was excellent. The perfect execution. Possibly the best in the area.

Inside this cosy buzzy place plants hang deliciously against clean white/grey walls and the wood interior makes for a Scandinavian vibe that is homely and inviting. The service is charming, friendly and informative of the food and enthusiastic for the menu. It’s refreshing and a reason to return alone.

If you want traditional brunch fare then it’s not for you. If you desire to be challenged and try top end food for a bargain price (though not cheap) then this is the place for you where innovative exciting Vegetarian dishes (there were five on the short menu.) are amended frequently and the chef cares enough to bravely mesmerise the diner.

Bloom stands out like a (good) sore thumb amongst the average curry houses in Kings Heath. A place for every occasion. It can only be good for the area. It’s what it needs.

It’s a Kitchen with ambition and it’s mine to work my way through its menu. Sharpish. Blooming lovely.

Andy 😊

Cooks in Case are bringing Puglian Italian Food to Kings Heath’s Kitchen Garden Cafe at the end of the month. All Veggie, Not Dogs is now open in the city centre. Veggie and Vegan hot dogs galore. Located on Link Street, between Debenhams and Grand Central at The Bullring just by New Street Station.

Try also tasty burgers and crispy fries.

With a lot of new openings in Birmingham at the moment, it seems a number are all style over substance and it’s hard to call if they can be rewarding for Vegetarians on the eating out front. As so often the case many are meat centred and thus difficult to judge.

Thankfully their are many great places to eat that have opened or due to open. See my posts on Zindiya And Indian Brewery.

In Praise of: Blue Ginger, Kings Heath, Birmingham.

Sad news reached me last week that the excellent Kings Heath based restaurant Blue Ginger is closing down after Christmas.

Blue Ginger has been one of my favourite restaurants ever since Ruth and I first visited when we first met, roughly eight years ago. We’ve enjoyed such great nights and meals together and I can’t remember how many times we’ve visited this small neighbourhood gem in Birmingham.

Dishes such as the outstanding Carrot Cake (savoury not sweet, a majestic dish and one of the best in the whole city, captures the simplicity of the restaurant dishes combining carrots, mooly, rice flour and spices). Possibly my favourite dish in Birmingham. Then there’s the curries Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Yellow Curry, a mild but exotic delight of vegetables. A delicious flavour. The jackfruit and Rabutan Red Curry, sweet and savoury together, with the Jackfruit the star combined with aubergines and mushrooms.

Both dishes are Vegan friendly.

Blue Ginger also became known locally for its Vegan night on a Monday. 7 main course dishes to choose from and numerous starters. Some going and if the truth be told it’s one of the best places for Vegans and Veggies to eat in Birmingham. It’s comfortable easy going service combined with deftly constructed Malaysian and Singaporean dishes packed with flavour made it popular and a relaxing and warm venue to visit. The atmosphere often buzzy and the space just the right side of intimate lent itself to a solid informal date night venue.

Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Yellow Curry

Carrot Cake Jackfruit and Rabutan red curry.

Mixed veg platter: for the undecided. Including the divine carrot cake. Kang Kon leaf side dish.

Roti Prata and rice. Essential to mop up the curry.

Pandan crepe: for afters. Good neighbourhood Restaurants like Blue Ginger are few and far between in Birmingham which seems to favouring the more glitzy venues these days and although the food at Blue Piano is the same as Blue Ginger the ambience and intimate space isn’t. In saying that I’ve enjoyed Blue Piano on the two occasions I’ve visited so will be visiting again in the new year for my Carrot cake fix.

Just to say that Ruth and I feel sad that Blue Ginger’s leaving us, gone but not forgotten, let’s just hope that the space is used by another independent restaurant and hopefully not another curry house or kebab shop. It’s a good space and deserves a new favourite to develop in Kings Heath.

Thanks for all the meals and good times from us both.

All the above dishes are available at the excellent Edgbaston based Blue Piano. Well worth a visit.

Veggie takeaway watch: Esme’s Eats, Kings Heath

Sometimes a takeaway is just what’s required on a Saturday evening and after eating numerous (and enjoyed) Kings Dining curries a change was in order.

Ruth’s a big Caribbean food fan. She loves the meaty curries and flavours that are de rigour of the region.

I’ve eaten a bit of Caribbean food, but as a veggie it’s harder to find the variation in dishes to keep me keen and interested.

What I’ve eaten I’ve enjoyed and having been brought up in Handsworth the homemade Jamaican Rum Cakes I’ve had resulted in superlatives that I can still see, feel and hear now.

So it was on a cool Saturday evening that I walked up to Esmie’s Eats to collect our food. This local Kings Heath restaurant has had a bit of a makeover in recent months and offers, breakfasts, lunches and evening meals as well as takeaways. Inside it’s cafe like, but in a lovely way that makes it feel authentic and when busy would provide a cracking atmosphere that is the escence of the Caribbean.

That evening it was quiet, I’d ordered over the phone and felt instantly comfortable and trusting of the lovely service and friendliness of Esme’s charms. The menu isn’t as you would expect full of Vegetarian dishes but at this point I didn’t mind and the Veggie Mutton Curry intrigued me and scared me in equal measure.

Made from soya protein and mushrooms slowly cooked in its own juices its a delightful dish, that was as piping hot as the Strictly dancing that gobbled me up with my thirst quenching Purity Ubu beer. Full of good flavour and subtle spicing it was a lovely warming dish that was deeply satisfying. Served with Rice and Peas.

We also ordered a portion of Fried Dumplings and a side portion of Plaintain which were both excellent and added to the curry.

For heartwarming food Esme’s Eats is a good choice for an alternative weekend bite. Especially if you live with a meat eater and don’t won’t to do without the Veggie Mutton Curry is heart- warming food with good flavours and spicing and a satisfying meal for a winters evening.

For veggies well worth trying.

Andy 😊

Kings Heath food market: Saturday 12th November.

Kings Heath Street Food Market returns this Saturday 12th November featuring The Vegan Grindhouse by Vegan Vox Esme’s Eats, Stufo, The Spice is Right street food, Street Kitchen Brothers and Charlie Dumpling.

All of which should have veggie and vegan options. Of course The Vegan Grindhouse is completely Vegan friendly.

Replacing the wonderful Veggie Foodie favourites Brum Yum Yum it takes place at the same venue in Kings Heath Village Square from 11am-5pm.

Organised by the Kings Heath Business Improvement District it will take place as its predecessor  on the second Saturday until at least the end of the year.

Antoinette Hasson, General Manager of All Saints Community Development Company, said:

“All Saints Community Development Company, who host and organise a variety of monthly markets and community events on Kings Heath Village Square, are delighted to work with Kings Heath BID to create a new and exciting Food Market following on from the popular Brum Yum Yum.

The new Kings Heath Food Market will feature established street food vendors and showcase new talent to delight and excite.

The event will be Accompanied by entertaining live music and specialty drinks courtesy of local Kitchen Garden Cafe.

Veggie burger watch: The Kitchen Garden, Kings Heath, Birmingham.

The Kitchen Garden is one of my favourite places to visit. Be it breakfast, lunch or just a piece of cake and cup of tea, it covers all bases and covers them in a cosy cosseted kind of way. Just taking the walk through the winding path through the garden centre and past the organic food shop feels reassuring and lifts the gloom on a cloudy rainy day.

Entering this tranquil oasis there’s an abundance of choice for Vegetarians and Vegans and all with a nod to local and ethical sourcing. I’ve tried and reviewed most of the key elements to the hot veggie food menu for breakfast and brunch, but had never tried the veggie falafel burger that at £7.95 is competively priced and decent value.

The better veggie burgers have a balance of flavour and hold well in the bun. For this The Kitchen Garden falafel burger is a success with a good falafel filling that with the halloumi makes a filling burge that has a nice depth and isn’t too stodgy.

The chips though aren’t the best. A bit cool, a bit off coloured and rubbery for my liking and not to the standard I’d like with this decent veggie burger.

It Came with coleslaw and a nice original salad including chick peas, lettuce and red onion, which I liked as it wasn’t too powerful a flavour with the burger.

Falafel burger at Kitchen Garden

The Veggie Falafal burger is a very decent choice of lunch time indulgence at The Kitchen Garden Cafe in Kings Heath, and if their chips could be as good as their sister Fletchers next door then this dish would be amongst the best in the area. I suppose that’s something to work on and proof that a good chip goes a long way in making a fantastic burger meal perfect (Or certainly near).

The Kitchen Garden is a lovely cafe and this veggie burger is well worth eating again.

A good lunch time meat free choice.

Thanks for reading,

Andy 😊

We paid for our food and drinks ourselves. My opinions are honest as always.

Veggie Sunday lunch watch: The Station: Kings Heath, Birmingham.

The Station pub in Kings Heath underwent a refurbishment early in the year. Previously called the Sun at The Station, it’s now returned to its original name after been sold on.

For many years in Kings Heath’s history it was the pub closest to the now erased railway station that ran via Moseley from the city centre. Oh for its return. The train line is still there and caters for mostly freight trains, but the name of the pub has now returned to its rightful place as the first point of call on the High Street as you come in from the city via Moseley.

It’s a cosy local neighbourhood pub with a laid back feel with a large back room for events.

With a good selection of real ale, cocktails and friendly staff it makes a nice alternative to the Hare and Hounds and Fletchers Bar further down the High Street on York Road and it’s refurbishment does the style and age of the pub justice.

Ruth and I visited on a Sunday lunchtime in order to try out their Menu which includes a Veggie Nut Roast.

The Nut Roast came with lashings of Red wine gravy which is compulsory in my book and in many ways is a good test of the lunch. In this case the gravy was rich and punchy, though could have been a tad warmer.

The Nut Roast itself was lovely. Nicely textured, with a moist nutty feel that wasn’t over cooked or under flavoured in any way. It came with a huge Yorkshire pudding and mixed vegetables of carrots and peas and roasted potatoes. It was a good size Sunday lunch, and very enjoyable.

For pudding I  enjoyed an apple crumble with custard, which again was surprisingly good and in this case the custard was hot.

The Station in Kings Heath is a lovely suburban pub to visit. The Sunday Lunch menu is good value and with decent sized portions is a nice alternative in Kings Heath to curry, Italian and tapas. Outside their is a large beer garden which is comfortable and is a nice sun trap in the sunshine.

The vegetarian Nut Roast is to be recommended and was surprisingly full of flavour and depth and a decent choice for a roast in the area though not the best in the city by a long chalk. Well worth revisiting though for a straightforward hearty Sunday lunch in a cosy setting.

For a beer alone it’s worth a visit but stop for a bite to eat too, after all that trains not arriving for awhile.

Veggie Street food watch: Buddha Belly.

It seems that you cannot escape street food in Birmingham these days, and rightly so as the informality of eating food this way is an enlightened experience that in particular is Summer on a plate or container in this case. I’m a massive fan and am finding more and more to celebrate with this kind of eating.

It maybe easy to think that the street food scene isn’t for vegetarians and vegans, but one that’s top heavy with burgers and meat traders. Though to a degree this can seem true on occasions, there is a number of vegetarian and vegan traders on the scene as well as traders that cater well for meat free options. It’s just a case of knowing where and to whom to seek out. From burgers, Indian, Thai, Malaysian, Mexican, pizza, cakes, crepes and Mediterranean there’s a whole world to discover.

The beauty of Streetfood is that there’s usually something for everyone. Go with friends, family, children, take your time and explore. Ruth and I frequently go to Brum Yum Yum #KingshEATh in Kings Heath. Often She goes one way for food, I go another then we meet and eat and enjoy a beer with the food. Sometimes we go to the same place, Ruth even has vegetarian or vegan on a occasions. It’s often not knowing what you will choose to eat until you get there that is the pull and where discoveries arise.

So as a way of celebrating streetfood in all its guises I’m introducing an occasional series of posts focusing on the best traders and dishes for Vegetarians and Vegans to try in the Midlands area.

Buddha Belly run by Sai and her husband James is authentic Thai streetfood that can be enjoyed by everyone. Though not a fully veggie/vegan trader Buddha Belly has superb options that are authentic and a taste sensation. You can find them around Birmingham and the Midlands at streetfood events such as Brum Yum Yum, Digbeth Diner and Scoffs streetfood in Coventry amongst others.

Sai appeared on Masterchef in 2012 and out of that experience came the Buddha Belly concept that thrills so many and has made them ‘Best Streetfood trader in the Midlands’ and ‘Best streetfood in England and Wales’ winners in 2014.

Food prepared fresh from scratch, low in fat and authentically made with passion is the name of the game here. Ingredients are sourced locally and all meat (for your chums) is organic/free range and locally supplied.

All sauces are freshly made, have a serious kick and make the dish what it is..Joyous.

I tried the Vegan Yellow curry: A creamy, comforting delight of authenticity. Roasted cumin, Corriander seeds, Butternut Squash, Cauliflower, Courgettes.

A big dose of aromatic flavours, a thick consistency, with a delicate velvety texture.

With lovely spices running through the bright yellow golden ray of sunshine, it’s a Vegan curry to beat.

Without question the nicest Thai Yellow Curry I’ve eaten in the UK, that’s generous in size for £5 of your street food funds.

Beautifully memorable flavours and presented to restaurant standard.

Brum Yum Yum is held on the second Saturday of the month, in Kings Heath, Birmingham.
